Fewer than 700 people live in Puerto Pirámides, yet the bay in front of the village receives several hundred southern right whales each austral winter. The settlement began as a salt port. From 1898 a narrow-gauge line hauled salt from the Salinas Grandes, inland across the steppe, to a wooden pier below the sandstone bluffs.
